Car Review - Mercedes vs Audi vs BMW

Mercedes vs Audi vs BMW

So as you all know, I have had an experience in all three cars over the last few weeks. Each one has had its plus points and each has had pro's and con's in various area's. In all fairness, not all cars were equal, whether it be trim level, power, or even the country they were used in. When writing this, these have been factored in where I have been able to do so.

Car one - Mercedes E350

To look at, this car was mean, it has agressive looks with the sports trim and certainly looked the part when collecting it in the Hertz compound in Los Angeles. That says it - this car was hired in the USA and it was a left hand drive, so this was the natural disadvantage for this car.

Having said that, I had this car for a few days and did a couple of hundred miles in it, where I feel I got to use it to its full potential. It was an automatic with a 3500 cc naturally aspirated engine.

When getting into it, it had modern, clean looks and was very comfortable. Those who know me will know I like my sports seats and the sports suspension for the drive.

It was a rear wheel drive as I soon found out when leaving the Hertz compound - in all fairness, this was after a long 18 hours worth of flying.

Once on the Freeways, it was comfortable, smooth and had plenty of power, a feather of the throttle and it took of which was great. After driving it and when I got to my destination, I did feel as though I was ten years older. Not too sure why, but it just did.

The technology was reasonably easy to use and worked out the sat nav and telephone connection fairly easily. In all honesty, it was minimal effort to get going. There were a few delays in the COMMAND system when using it, but this is to be expected, is it not?

In terms of handling, not too impressed as it felt like a boat to some extent, but then it is a Merc.

Pros: Great levels of comfort and sharp looks
Cons: Poor handling, technology seems simple
Advantages: Plenty of power coupled with sport spec
Disadvantages: Left hand drive due to country of hire.

Car two - Audi A6 Avant Le Mans

This is my own car which is why many will say I am biased when writing this. It was purchased without seeing it and being an estate, I never had high hopes regarding the looks. Upon taking delivery, I was shocked, it was stunning. Clean lines that flow and looks that make an estate car trendy certainly appealed to me.

The down side to this car is that it had a 2000 cc diesel engine, so not much on the power, but the comfort levels on the Le Mans trim is exceptional.

Getting into the car after my flight back from the West coast of the USA was an experience, never have I been so baffled with computers in a car. I genuinely thought I would never get used to everything.

After driving it in the rain, heavy rain on the day of collection I must add, I was shocked - the whole journey was a positive experience. The Navigation system was a scare in terms of complexity but to drive it felt precise, no clumsyness, no boat like feeling - just a pure connection between driver and road - and this is when I was tired.

As a few days went by, I phoned Audi to show me the systems again, they did say we can call anytime, especially as they knew I had just got back off a flight on the morning of collection.

Powerwise I was actually looking for economy with the current UK fuel prices, and this was great - 60mpg! In all fairness, for the weight of the vehicle, the 2 litre was impressive, but nowhere near as quick as the other two cars in this review. It was also a front wheel drive, a front wheel drive that was precise which was impressive.

The down side here is that when you want to increase speed quick on the motorway, I have to shift down a gear.

Now that I am used to the voice control etc, I am a lot happier and its great, as I know it as my spaceship - the interior is ultra modern, great for comfort and it would be interesting to see what the higher performance models are like.

Pros: Great comfort, driver to road connection and technology
Cons: Technology is hard to use at first.
Advantages: Sports pack (suspension, seats etc)
Disadvantages: Its the smaller end of the engine range & an estate

Car Three - BMW 530d SE

This car is great when you see them on the motorway, I managed to get my hands on one and it was an interesting experience, as it was the last of the three cars I had. The interior seemed a little uncomfortable, but this is the only car that is not the sports edition.

Another rear wheel drive which is great fun and a traction control system that allows you to be adventerous is interesting. The car was an automatic and had eight forward going gears, yes, eight of them. This meant power delivery was smooth and the car was quick - very impressive I must say.

For handling it would be unfair to say much as it was an SE, however, it felt like a boat on wheels. The I-drive system is still hard to use unless you have been driving BMW's for a while (fortunatley I have) but to someone new, it would be an absolute nightmare.

On the motorways it was great, like a tank but with a lot more reponse and torque. I have seen a few of the sport editions in the showroom and I think BMW have a lot to work on with the I-Drive system. They have got the power right, comfort was right for an SE, but the technology is something you need a degree in rocket science to operate.

It could be me, but the looks of the car were more appealing as I drove it, and BMW really need to move away from run flat tyres - an SE which is bumpy = run flat tyres.

It was also the heaviest on fuel consumption, but then the great think is that with the eight gears, you are always closer to the max power range on the engine revs which is what really impressed me.

As a driver of BMWs for many years, I really felt BMW could have enhanced the technology, I still prefer the older pre-I drive setup, but then I may be old fashioned. The power did it for me in this car and the sheer smoothness of the journey.

The traction control in adventurous mode certainly brings the car to life, and I have never come across a system so proactive – it is almost as quick as the driver!

Pros: Great power and gearing setup.
Cons: I-Drive, is there a university course on this?
Advantages: 3 Litre diesel engine
Disadvantages: It was the SE trim level.

If I had to go out and spend money on a car, I know for a fact I would go for an Audi, but the BMW and Mercedes would be joint second as they both made me smile. Call me biased, but Audi have come a very long way, and yes the technology is not the easiest, but when putting it down to driver experience, it certainly makes the driver smile.

So it has been a couple of weeks since my last update in which I have been to London twice and had a fair chance to catch up with things.

Working on new products at work is never easy, but it’s always an interesting challenge!

How are the wheels? In the wet, great! In the dry – awesome. For an estate, it moves!

It has been three days

Since my arrival back into the UK and my body is still on GMT-8. This isn’t good as still tired in the day regardless of how much I am fighting it. Tonight will try something new to get over this.

So the new toy was collected on Saturday @ 08:00. It was in the Audi handover bay with 0 miles on the clock – this worked well for me. I completed the documents and took it straight home, I was too tired to try all the features. I have managed to get used to the voice control which is ace – a car that listens to me.

Its great around town – a trendy estate, just need to try it on the motorways…

It has been a few days since my last update. Crazy would be an understatement in some cases, it sure has been a work hard party harder setup.

Where do I start? I write again whilst on board flight CO1426 from Las Vegas to New York after having approximately 1 hour 45 minutes worth of rest.

Since my last update, the conference had been full on with courses and side meetings to ensure we are moving forward. These discussions have been full on about technology, processes and people. Ultimately all three have to work at 100% to ensure success.

Having learnt a lot from the various technologies, the evenings were spent at the corporate events followed by night outs which start at normal quiet bars and end in some crazy nightclubs.

Tuesday had a much nicer club atmosphere where the night seemed to flow better whereas Wednesday was pretty much a case of let’s turn up and see. Wednesday went on much later, and night life in Las Vegas is interesting, I have had almost every drug I can name has been offered to me on the street, and for the record, none of them were of any interest to me, however, these people are so open about it.

Upon return on Wednesday in the early hours, I got some rest and hit the gym in the Bellagio at 6am - that sure woke me up and was a well needed event - still feel energized from it now - on Friday at 10:15 am, local time.

So going back to the corporate events, Tuesday was a Pool Party - was good but far too hot to enjoy and Wednesday was an interesting semi-formal event - no need to get changed before heading out.

Thinking about the pool, I have to admit, even though the Caesars Palace pool looked nice from a distance, the Bellagio pool was the place to be at the pool side itself.

I would say I have had just less than two and a half hours worth of sleep in the last seventy two hours, Vegas is full of energy where you don't feel tired, however, now that I am out and away from the hotel environment, it seems like a very different story.

Upon arrival to the airport it was great, on time, and I was very relaxed. Checked in fine - the automatic check-in machines could not find my reservation so was brilliant - I am clearly not a fan of all this self service at airports, I got to speak to a Human to check me in - who happily, upon request placed a priority tag on my baggage upon some negotiation - an update within the next few days will make it clear why this is an essential today of all days. I then went through security and you could tell this was the end of a technology conference - loads of people with multiple bags and laptop bags, but most importantly, I could see hundreds of people with my company logo on their laptop cases. I wonder where they have been.

After leaving security I had a little wander around the airport to familiarize myself with the gate location, just to ensure there are no missed departures this time. Ok, so it was Gate 21 - that was fine, it was empty so pointless waiting there. I then had a look for the lounges and I know from last time that Vegas had quite a nice relaxing Presidents club lounge, so I went towards there, next to gate 33 if I recalled correctly. There it was, up the lift and to the left. It had a new addition of some automatic doors which had the pattern on the glass that was quite cool - not something I normally notice; however, it was pretty cool.

Upon entry I used the Amex method vs. the priority pass to enter as it was a little easier and hey, it was a nice I remembered. Got myself a comfortable sofa and put my bags down. My thoughts were that it was time for a drink - a coffee followed by a bowl of cereal, as it was only 06:00 local time. Once I had this, it was time for the bagel - they tasted great when I was there last so time to have one again.

I sat for a few minutes just to let that digest and headed to the bar for a Diet Coke - "ah, how refreshing" was my exact thought. Then I sat, connected to the Wi-Fi and gave Frema a call using facetime. She was at her house so I knew she would have connectivity, two rings and a success. We caught up and I sat in a very relaxed position. Time flew by and it was boarding time. Approached the gate and saw a familiar face - a colleague who was on the same flight from the New York office. We spoke and then he boarded as he was at the back of the place.

I was in Row 12, so I have a wait.

When it came to getting on board, I noticed all the overhead luggage compartments were very full - this is due to the plane being full from conference attendees with multiple bags - and techies like big bags as they like to carry a lot of stuff. Just in case in many cases, and yes, I am just as guilty, but hey, I condensed down to one bag.

The flight attendant apologized and said I would need to keep the bag by my feet - works for me, I actually preferred that so I did not have to reach up to get anything from my bags. This also meant I could quite easily pull out my laptop to start typing this post.

So it’s now 10:35 local time, so have been typing for a while. The Laptop battery is at 64% - so no rush, not just yet anyway.

I believe this is a four or five hour flight, so still have approx three hours left. I cannot wait to get of this place as I have a window seat - not something I like by any means. When I open the window flap, it looks dry outside and I see the front of the engine - it’s a plane with two engines, looks quite small to be honest and now understand why it is pretty loud.

I don't have a headache yet, well, not that I know of, I am putting the slight pain in the head down to tiredness.

Newark airport has quite a nice lounge if I recall correctly so should be nice just to relax there so am prepared and ready for my next flight. Must remember, I need to exit Birmingham airport pretty quick today, once again, the next few days will reveal all.

So after heading out to Long Beach, and then meeting an old colleague I made my way to LAX, returned the car to be met by long check in queues and longer security queues. The staff were not bothered about my flight which was boarding, so when I got to the gate, they shut the door as I got there.

I now have a 4 hour wait until the next one...so I am now in the Continental Presidents club relaxing.

I am awake and ahead of schedule today, which gives me the perfect chance to update this blog. I am due in Long Beach at 9 am and its 06:30 – not bad, I have an hour until I need to leave and am showered, ready and pretty much good to go. I can’t see a reason to leave earlier and am happy with the way the day is shaping up so far.

A midday departure from LAX will see me in Vegas by approx 13:30 at the hotel I hope, this will depend on baggage queues etc.

Looking forward to it, let stage two of the trip commence. I have a 90 minute drive this morning before I give the wheels back, shame really as it’s a pretty decent car.

Update - Day 2

So day two is here, and up at 5am (local time), I was. got ready and headed out for a drive - initially followed byt he police but then I continued peacefully.

As I got back to where I am staying, I had some tea and of we went for a wonder to the top of the hill for some pics followed by some shops and malls to get some essential shopping done.

After landing at Newark I soon discovered that there was an earlier flight I could get to LA – on it I was!

Not an easy flight, quite bumpy, but ok, average I suppose, I was tired and needed some rest.

Getting to LA was an adventure as there were no signs for the car hire – and the one allocated to me was a black convertible in which my luggage would not fit – so I had to have a change to a Merc E Class – see pics attached – it even had a reversing camera & I was the first driver!!!

Time to get to bed – good night!

En route to Newark

Today, I write as I am seated on a plane, it’s a long journey which looks like it’s coming to an end within the next hour or so. Upon check in at Birmingham, staff were friendly and polite, not sure if I can say they were helpful, certainly not at check in.

Frema came to the airport this morning to see me off before she caught the train to work, so I took her to the air rail link so she could make her way to work. I proceeded to security which was great, I was transferred to the express line where I could afford to take my time, but get through their checks in a timely manner.

I was starting to get peckish, but not ready for breakfast as it was only 06:30, so I made my way towards the lounge, had a couple of roasted nuts and a drink of Bitter Lemon. Did my usual Facebook update and thought it was time for a walk around. Went to a few shops, met up with some old colleagues and hey presto, it was 08:00 – boarding had started.

Slowly went towards the gate and saw it was pretty empty – the lady said the plane was half full which was awesome. I asked to check if my seat was an aisle seat which was confirmed, however, it was one that would not recline. I was then reallocated a full row – awesome, I thought.

As I boarded the hostess was asking everyone’s names and memorizing them, which was very different – it was so she could provide a personalized service in her part of the cabin.

I then settled down and watched a couple of movies, had a snack to eat followed by a lie down – hey, I can, I had the whole row of seats here!

I woke up, fired up my laptop, started writing this mail – offline of course, but it takes a short part of the journey away.

Upon landing we have to go through customs etc as it is our first entry into the US and then recheck our bags in the transfer process before heading towards Los Angeles. Will I get a chance to visit the lounge and relax for a short while? I hope that there may be an earlier flight into LA which I can be put on, but not sure just yet. Also, I do hope it is a shorter flight – am starting to get a little tired of sitting with no internet – but then it’s a good chance to let my mind unwind.

At LA, I shall be picking up a car, so need the rest before my onward journey.

It's been over a month since my last post which shows I am behind on blogging again.

What's new? Where has my time been going? Work trips to Copenhagen followed by a trip in a couple of days heading to Vegas via LA will be keeping me occupied for the next few days. The design and updates on west-mids-imprezas.com is now complete too.

I completed the Birmingham to Oxford 75mile cycle for the third year running on Sunday gone which was probably the most challenging route out of them all - not sure why, but Iam thinking it was pure heat.

Anyway, look forward to more updates soon...oh, I forgot to add, there is a new forum on this site - you will know about it if you have been invited...

With the last few weeks, well months, flying by, there have been a series of events and travels.

Starting with back in March, there has been a series of travels over the UK, whether they be up north or down south, I am back in the car and no more trains after the last experience.

More often than not, the journeys have been quicker by car.

There has also been an engagement in the process and yes, I am now engaged.

Work was back to normal, especially after the long weekends, now looking forward to the next one at the end of the month. This year seems to be the year to get married with all the weddings going on too.

Journey this week

As you know, last week was a week of getting the train – I was exhausted with less travel than normal! This week back to the car and the Birmingham to London journey was far quicker (door to door) than a Virgin train. Much smoother, I could choose if I wanted to stop and generally a comfier trip.

Arrived at the office fresh and ready to work. Travel by car over rules the whole public transport idea for me.

A long day at work, very productive and very tiring. On way home after a quick journey to the Euston. Boarded the train to find no seats in any carriage, apart from the last one. The clock sowed 15.22 and the train was due to depart at 15.23. Doors close 40 seconds before departure meaning I had, at best, 20 seconds to board. Boarding carriage A had to be a sprint along the platform, else it would have meant sitting in a luggage rack.

Its still unfair t say the total trip has been terrible, as there is a slim chance it will get better. Note: use of slim.

From routine tasks to crazy solutions, I have come up with some strange idea’s today.

On a train

After finding the car's MOT has expired, it is now parked up and locked away in the garage until I return from my travels this week. As a result I am now seated on a train where I have a table seat but still not as comfortable as the leather sports seats the car.

So the journey is from Birmingham to Reading onward to Euston and then home tomorrow. I recall getting trains a very long time ago, and they seemed to be better then, or is that because it was the Birmingham to Euston journey, with a much bigger train?

The train seems to be moving at probably 60 mph, shaking like crazy and the cabin is quite warm - I could wear shorts and t-shirts to be comfy - can't see people at the office being impressed.

Ok, so I need to stop complaining about the train, I'm giving it a fair chance by trying it out, but so far not looking positive. You never know, this may change and all will be different maybe, but we shall see.

The outside seems to be very foggy and am hoping its a pleasant day ahead. Looking through my diary and making notes it seems to be getting full pretty quick, I like to keep it at about 80% to deal with anything that comes along without notice.

Got lunch booked with a colleague today which should be good, its been a while since we have spoke and a technical catch up is overdue. The venue is arranged, the office canteen, which is pretty good - another happy thought when going to Reading.

Anyways, I better stop typing and plan the rest of the day, I see some re-arranging of the diary coming up ahead.

Am back in the UK now, and within the first week on travels again. London yesterday, Watford today and Gloucester tomorrow is an interesting mix. Have a few Birthday drinks planned tomorrow evening to celebrate this year – nothing to crazy, but a nice catch up with a few friends will certainly be a nice start to the weekend ahead.

Unsure of next week’s plans at the moment but know I have a lot of testing to do in a virtual lab I built this week. 10 VM’s build in a day ready for use!

So its been a long two weeks. With everything that's going on its been manic, the heat, the long days, the longer journeys and driving around in the bus below has been awesome.

Here I site typing this mail to this blog whilst I am being transported to Mumbai from Navsari to get that flight back.

The bus is nice, relaxing and will prep me well for the flights later on today, well, tomorrow morning.

Another update within 24 hours

So far so good. So the West Mids Impreza's group had an invite to a run up north, one I did want to be a part of, however, India is just as enjoyable. Now that I have some strength back we are on route to Surat, this will be interesting as its a short, snappy journey that is also a road trip.

Listening to Chase and Status this morning was refreshing. Did consider a shave but time was precious this morning. Having said that a mega power shower at a temperature that made my skin look like I was a lobster was energising, followed by entering the room at a controlled 16 degrees Celsius.

Now that I'm a little better I decided on doing my hair, and in th heat it has grown!

So now that I've made the effort to decorate, walking into reception at the hotel in a sleeveless top caught the eye of the receptionist, many women here are looking for instant marriage, especially to a guy from the UK.

Not what I'm here for so into the 4x4 to Surat. Bon Voyage!

After a hectic start to 2011, here I am in India, typing to this blog.

Where do I start? The year so far has been manic with many travels over Europe already, typically seeing home one day a week. Some say crazy, others say its good to be busy.

So now I'm on a well deserved break, in India with my family. The difference is that this time the whole family has travelled and it's a very different experience. The long road trips, the mountain climbing, the looking after the little niece who was hyper on diet pepsi etc has, so far, been an awesome experience.

Presently in Navsari, Gujarat, I am sitting here struggling to sleep. Yes I was ill this time and ground to a halt with minimal ability to walk. A day of rest and plenty of medicine changed that around very quickly and brought me back to life.

A slightly shorter trip tomorrow to Surat will be interesting and no doubt there will be an update soon.

Busy

So it’s been a good few weeks since I last wrote on this blog and after trying to maintain weekly updates, it got to the stage where there were not enough hours in the day.

What’s been happening? There has been a lot going on with work, and trying to keep work at work has not really been an option recently, so this has been creeping in. A fair few travels have led me up to this week where I aim to take a breath or two and catch up this weekend, does not really seem to be happening.

The term firing on all four cylinders seems appropriate, and has been so for a fair while now, need to pause and get some rest at some stage (so I keep saying).

It certainly has been interesting as have increased my network size a lot, in fact doubled it, ranging from people who have been a great deal of help in more than one area to people who have really inspired some thoughts. Of course, with these comes the useless minority too, who are there, but for some unknown reason – guess it’s about having the right balances.

Anyway, that’s enough from me today, a little annoyed today but hey, not every day is good now is it? If only more people were as honest as I, im sure it would be very different...

So an early start today heading away to a series of meetings meant an early night yesterday. Got up looking forward to the journey as it was a way to put some mileage on the car, so it gets worn it. I crossed the 500 mile line and allowed it to rev up to 4k rpm, and it felt a lot quicker and responsive to what it was - an interesting thought.

250 miles until the 5k rpm mark and 250 after that means full power post oil change. Happy days!

So it has been a good few months since I last posted an update, and a busy few months it has been!

From attending weddings all over the country and working in opposite locations I sure have been travelling a fair amount. I have now changed cars and currently got an Impreza, a slight change from the BMW enthusiast within me, but it is certainly the way forward, for now...when it happily leaves an Audi R8, I know it means business!

I have also set up a small part time photography business which allows me to stay out of trouble on the weekends. Looking at the site today, which does require some enhancements, I recognise the blog needs a little more attention, as seems to have had its fair empty spots.

The second day in Dubai and after ful day of wondering and exploring Meena Bazaar & the Gold Souk, today is going to be relaxing - he says!

From being up at 8am yesterday through to going to the supermarket to get some food. So what happens when you send us to a supermarket - we come back with pizza & ice cream - for two of us of course!

Getting to sleep at 2am was tiring considering a 9am start today - in prep for some more sights and of course, the desert safari.

London, with the new toy

So many of you will be aware of the BMW Z4 I've been seen in when out and about, time to see how it copes on a journey to London.

A great machine, but very light on the motorway, and as you know, I like the heavier meaner cars.

Top journey with a little traffic after Beaconsfield - pretty normal for a Monday morning. Didn't have a coffee this morning - not too sure why, but a change of car has meant a change of routine for some reason.

Encountered the older Z4, the 3 litre variant, but the lady did struggle to keep up - I think the newer sDrive engines are much higher revving than the older.

Anyway, a pic is attached of the car relaxing - no doubt you will have an update soon.

So from being recovery on Friday to the West Midlands Impreza’s tunnel run on Saturday, the weekend has been very eventful.

A very interesting Monday morning with only two hours sleep & gentle swim down the M40. The rain was full on and the M40 may as well have been a river with the amount of surface water on it. Have to admit, a 530D struggled to keep up, which is pretty interesting.

As you may know, I try to avoid getting the trains where possible but today was unavoidable.

With the brakes on the car running low over the weekend coupled together with low parts availability means the car is off the road for the day.

Yes, until the local garage get the parts in it means I have a vehicle on the drive without any brakes...certainly a no go when going into central London.

So up at the usual time and now on the train, quite impressed as I got to the station and straight onto the train.

Just left Coventry and heading towards work...

A Few Months...

A few months have passed since the blog has had an update, and it certainly has been very eventful!

So since the last time I updated this page, I have since been to Madrid, and for those of you that know me, I am sure you will appreciate the stories from the visit, and how a one day trip became a three day visit.

Since then, my return to Birmingham was pretty rushed and have been pretty busy since, up until today, where things seem to have stopped and slowed down a little.

Friends, colleagues & family have often said I have been living life at a hundred miles per hour, and the latter part of this year has disappeared.

There have been amazing times, some not so happy times and so great times after over the last few months and as you can tell, the Event Pictures page has had a few more events appear.

I now take the pictures for West Midlands Impreza's, and every event is captured - moving (Tunnel Run) or still (West Mids Impreza's).

Great events, great people, and certainly great times. If you know any Subaru drivers who are interested, let me know!

No doubt I will have more updates in the near future, but thats it for now.

So, after a nonstop few weeks post the Toronto trip, we headed to Wales with an aim to wind down and relax.

With the weather predicted at showers for the whole trip, I think we did well, with only 2 days of showers – so that was not too bad.

Just got back yesterday morning and the tiredness is catching up, with a broken finger (ok, not quire broken, but feels like it) typing really isn’t the easiest thing to do.

Birmingham to London

An interesting trip this morning where there was a Range Rover TDV8 (3.6 or 4l engines), a lexus rx400 and me, making a 120 mile journey a mere walk in the park. Now I must admit, leaving home at 5am does help a lot, but this journey was completed far quicker than what a Virgin train could do it in at about half the cost– very interesting.

Hit some debris (parts of an old lorry tyre) on the road, no damage to vehicle, but annoying! Considering a highways agency car was behind me, it did seem concerning they didn’t stop to remove the debris.

So now in London, and preparing for the day here with my bowl of cornflakes.

So its been a week since I have been back in the UK, hit the ground running as I landed and a week later im going for a swim in the lunch break from work.

I’ve had a lot of demand for the pics and as some of you may have noticed, a slideshow link now appears in the galleries – to make viewing that little bit easier. The upload is in progress and the site is under a lot of maintenance – to the point where I was tempted to put a notice up – but its not affecting too many visitors.

The majority of time is going into the albums of Australia – there certainly are a lot of pics there.

Last Day.

The last full day in Toronto before getting ready to leave tomorrow morning. Its been a quick ten days, still trying to work out where time has gone - seems like we only landed yesterday.

I guess thats what a busy trip does though, it was the same in Australia not too long ago where the three weeks just flew by and was on the way home. It's the effects of packing out a trip back to back - maybe need a vacation to get over this one!

The Wedding and reception were yesterday, and both were organised really well, the pics show it! I can not believe how quick everything has gone by.

For those of you that know I am into my photography, there have been a lot of pics taken - over a thousand and they are under the Event Pictures link above. Fortunatley I was able to have access to a fast enough internet connection to have the pics posted live within 24 hours. A lot of people have asked where these pics will be - its easier to have them on the site instead of emailing them individually. Should you require the username or password, please do feel free to contact me via the Contact page.

Aside from that the pound is weak, the electricals here cost a lot more than they would in the UK - about 6 months ago, it was the opposite way around - so have not been able to upgrade the camera on this occasion.

So, have pretty much packed all the stuff, now making my way over to my cousins house to spend the last few hours with the family before returning for an early night.

My next update will be as I arrive in the UK.

Day Two

The 2nd day at Rina's house and it was glowing, people everywhere working to get the relevant bits and pieces done, like clockwork.

Many photos have been taken and have been made live usually within 24 hours of the snap, I have hosted them under the Event Pictures tab of this site.

So, why was my location kept secret? A lot of people did not know we were going to travel this distance to the wedding so it was easier to keep it quiet from everyone apart from a few key people - to ensure the suprise element is undisturbed. And a suprise it was when we attended!

The trip started of in New York and then involved a long-ish drive to Toronto, with a night at Niagra Falls. We then continued the journey and here we are, with only three days before we return. Many will be wondering where the pictures are - they are in the process of being made available on this site - please contact me for the username & password to get to them.

Road trip complete...

Road trip complete...

So now the main road trip is over and the vehicle has been exchanged for something more appropriate (lets say, it’s a lot taller than those around me) its time to relax. He says.

With friends giving me details of places to go see cars and wanting to utilise the little time I have here, its going to be days longer than usual! The weather is not the best today, a little rainfall but im sure it will clear up pretty quick…in fact, I hope it does.

People here are very friendly, willing to help when need be. A 10 hour road trip broken down by a night stay the quarters of the way, completed smoothly. Fuel costs pennies so for those who know me, know im enjoying it!

Second night.

So the second night has passed, so far everything is going to plan, apart from the type of coffee here, which one can pretty much live with.

Finally over the key lag and looking back at the flight it was good, food was good and service was excellent. KLM, will have to use them again. The movie choice was ok, watched mall cop and the curious case of Benjamin Button. Mall cop was great, easy to watch movie, funny and kept me entertained. The curious case of Benjamin Button was average, overrated as its weird. Some would see it as sad, it has some funny scenes but that's it. The story is weird and iits not something I would watch again.

Moving forward, we the landed a little later as a plane had to jump in our way due to a medical emergency on their side, but was in all, a good flight.

We then tried getting a taxi, to which the first person said we have too much luggage, so the second person in line with the same taxi offered to take us, with exactly the same car. The first guy then offered to take us. Quite funny, but the first chap initialy chose to show an obstacle.

Got to the hotel which was really nice, and set about going to sleep, it had been a long day, almost 20 hours.

Yesterday we were out the door at 8am and walking around the city. Nice place, nice weather and friendly people. Did the city tour, half the city was covered and was heat, it included a ferry trip and a trip up to an observation deck.

Today, I think we will go for the other half of the city, just two nights left until we move on to our next city.

Some readers have worked out where I am, some have sent me text messages to ask. I will post locations in due course

Its been another long while since I last posted s message.

So today, I await the gate doors to open for my flight to Paris at Birmingham airport. Looking out the window I see snow and planes being washed with de icer.

Driving up my road yesterday was interesting, with compressed snow under the wheels, going up the gradient wasn't as easy as it seemed.

You may note there is a new event pictures link at the top of this page. Just before Australia I purchased a new digital SLR, this is now my hobby. Since then I have invested in various bits and pieces for the camera, and am now looking forward to the opportunity to take pictures of every moment.

Going back for a moment, and poking out of the window reminds me of the snow in lpndon yesterday. A fee inches and the city was a standstill. Drivers were scared and stopping, buses were cancelled, tubes had waterfalls as they opened doors. This just shows how often we get snow.

The public built a snowman taller than me outside the office. The few people who went to work were merry.

This now makes me wonder what Paris will be like...

On the train into London again...month end so preparing for a busy one. Got to admit the pain au chocolat and latte from stuffed crust at new street station has gone down well

Returning to work after a three week vacation has been interesting, majority of the role was covered which is great but its firefighting with the parts that weren't. Almost there, although it does seem weird trying to pick up where I left of and someone else has covered.

I got to admit, Javier did a great job covering the core aspects...he is away next month for two weeks so will be interesting to see it reversed.

The best part of coming back is knowing you have been missed. Plus with a clear mind its great making decisions, knowing your introducing fresh thoughts. Its true when they say you should walk away from a problem and not thinking about it...when you return your going to have the solution, or at least have a better chance of finding it)

Whilst back I'm also exploring encryption which is going to be a challenge as its a new area (on email anyway...especially when I haven't looked at it in over nine months. At first glance it seemed fairly straightforward but I know there are the complex scenarios I need to get into...if you don't deal with the you won't learn.

Aside from work I need to add more capacity to the home server and enable raid mirroring. I'm thinking two western digital 1 terabyte drives mirrored as my days drive it 200 GB and at 50 per cent capacity. You may wonder why the big increase in capacity.

About two months ago I bought a new digital SLR, namely the canon eos 400D. Great piece of kit and have bought a few accessories for it. Now in there weeks I took nearly 5000 shots, put of which I'll keep 80 per cent. Now I've always been interested in photography, my father used to enjoy it too so I guess its followed on, but the cost of film, processing etc vs digital was enormous. Now that I've got the equivalent in SLR to my film one, I can afford to be more creative and take it up again, which will involve large picture files and with some shots, I probably won't be able to take again, hence the raid mirroring.

I am a fan of animating pictures and keeping them in a video format so the file sizes will be increasing.

In the three weeks there were instances when capturing wild life the compactflash card strugghled to keep up...taking constant shots...trying to capture a dolphin in a good pose whilst swimming etc.

Anways, I guess that's enough for now, I will be uploading some holiday pictures up on here soon...so watch this space...

So, have been in Sydney for just over 24 hours and so far so good.

Landed yesterday and went to the hotel...a nice place just out side the city to enjoy some peace at night.

Decided to wonder around the city in the day and see what tours I could get onto. Booked onto the blue mountain for today and went back to the hotel.

Rohan from work picked me up in the evening and we went to get a bite to eat with Hemal. Definatley good to catch up. Certainly enjoyed the evening which ended up being a late night back...for an early start today...the guys are great and showed me around the city.

Anyway, on this tour at the moment and having lunch...opted for a Dominos pizza...

Ramsey Street & Great Ocean Road

Started the day with a tour of Neighbours so went to the office where I saw this familiar for sale sign (IMG_1789). When we got to Ramsey St itself (actually called something else) I took a few snaps where IMG_1794 is one of them. When the tour finished and picked up the car - Ford Falcon XR6 - 4 litre engine (IMG_1966). I'm sure you can imagine, this was one great ride. So took it to the Great Ocean Road and it started to rain. Made the most of it with the windy roads etc and took a number of snaps (IMG_1948). The drive was a very scenic route and being in a comfortable car was as important as the journey itself.

After a number of days travelling and sightseeing its almost time to move on to Melbourne.

Last night in Rotorua tonight and the preparations for tomorrows three hour drive to Auckland. Once there, hand the keys back to avis and fly away...the last of New Zealand.

Over the last two days I've visited Waitomo caves and the Polynesian spa with a number of great drives...from the steep hills to the hairpin bends...the Lancer X has coped well. Not the best of motors around here but works hard when pushed.

It’s been a while since I last posted, possibly since I have come back from New York.

So, what have I been up to?

Been busy travelling (commuting) to London and back working there for a while and work has kept me pretty tied down. Been on a training course for the last 8 days and got to admit it is quiet enjoyable – have discovered that I have no one to cover me though – which makes it difficult as the load is being spread over many people.

Booked some flights for my holiday – and got everything sorted out. Picked up a few suitcases and starteing to pack. Where? You’ll have to wait and see.

Back home

So, the day starts with minimal sleep the night before and I am trying to pack all my stuff – not easy after ten days of being all over the place. Arrive at work to see I’m straight into meetings and tied up for the majority of the day. Planned a car to take me to Newark airport at 14:30 giving me enough time to meet any traffic issues en route.

At the airport, the staff are great – everyone fairly helpful and for once the security did not bleep as I walked through it. So, at the gate, catching up on most mails via the blackberry and started reading another book – not bad, the first of the two I bought for this trip was complete within 24 hours – Too Close To Home by Linwood Barclay. Interesting reading after Linwood’s previous book – No Time For Goodbye. Both books are a great read!

This book was supposed to be reading for the flight on the way back but got a neck ache preventing me doing so. Anyways, I get onto this flight to find the take off is earlier than planned – now this seems interesting – this never seems to happen. The food times were announced which is great until they have no vegetarian food reserved for me. The lady handing out the food was the most unhelpful person ever – I got a half heated “I’m sorry” whilst swiftly moving on. Moments later I spoke to another lady who managed to get some food from the business class area – which was only fruit – but it was a nice thought.

Anyways, time to get some rest, on the road in 3-4 hours heading in to Gloucester.
